House Painting in Philadelphia:

Our Process

Even though every project is different, we feel there are certain steps that must be completed every time for the best results.

So here we want to share with you just a generic overview of the process we use for interior and exterior house painting.

Depending on the surface to be painted (stucco, wood, aluminum, vinyl, popcorn, etc.), some of the steps will vary, and we will explain to you all the specifics of your particular project during our consultation (also, your contract will have all the details).

General guidelines:

  • Our painters will typically start work between 7:30am and 8:30am
  • Our typical work day is 8 hours
  • We typically work in consecutive days
  • Our crews typically consist of 2-3 people
  • All work is done from top to bottom, one wall/room at a time
  • Our workers will clean up after themselves daily
  • In lived-in spaces, furniture will be put back close to its original position at the end of each day
  • All materials and equipment will be kept on the project, organized in a staging area

Before we start:

  • After the contract is signed and a few days before the determined start date, we will contact you to get information about the colors you want to use on your project.

  • If you haven't selected any colors yet and need help in that area, we will schedule a complimentary color consultation to help you choose the best colors for your home.
  • If you are still unsure about the selected colors, let us know and we will come and apply them to the wall in a small test patch area to help you decide.
  • We will discuss with you the work sequence and daily schedule, and determine the place for our staging area.

Exterior process:

  • We start by covering and protecting all surfaces and areas not-to-be-painted (concrete, roof, plants, shrubs, etc.) and mask all windows if spraying is necessary.

We then proceed to do the following:

  • Remove old loose/peeling paint by hand scraping and using power grinders, sanders and paint shavers.
  • Pressure wash surfaces to clean them from old paint debris, dust and mildew.
  • Check for rotten wood and replace it.
  • Prime bare surfaces for protection and to give paint something to bond to.
  • Set popped nails and fill holes.
  • Reglaze windows if required.
  • Caulk cracks and gaps around window and door trim for protection and insulation.
  • Apply paint using the method and number of coats specified in the contract.

Interior process:

  • We start by moving all furniture to the middle of the room.

We then proceed to do the following:
  • Cover and protect all surfaces not-to-be-painted (floors, furniture, light fixtures, etc.)
  • Remove or mask hardware.
  • Retape corners if required.
  • Spackle, fill holes, dents and other imperfections in the walls.
  • Lightly sand/degloss shiny surfaces for better paint adherance.
  • Prime bare and spackled areas for protection and to give paint something to bond to.
  • Caulk cracks and gaps around window and door trim for appearance and insulation.
  • Apply paint using the method and number of coats specified in the contract.

To finish up, we:

  • Use our quality control checklist to inspect our work and complete any touch-ups.
  • Do a walk through with the homeowner to ensure your complete satisfaction with the job.
  • Complete the final clean up and put everything back in place.
